The Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) has invalidated the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) results for graduates of Bright Education Institute (BEI), a massage therapy school in Dania, Florida. According to an October 1, 2026, notification, the decision follows regulatory action by Florida authorities that rescinded the school’s approval retroactively to September 19, 2016. This invalidation affects more than ten (10) years of massage therapist graduates.
The decision could have serious consequences for affected massage therapists, including restrictions on future examination eligibility and potential concerns involving professional licensure.
Florida Regulators Take Action Against Bright Education Institute
The MBLEx is a nationally recognized examination used by state licensing boards to evaluate entry-level competency for massage therapists. The FSMTB establishes examination policies and reviews potential violations involving applicants, educational records, and testing procedures.
On June 8, 2026, the Florida Commission for Independent Education (CIE) issued a Final Order denying BEI’s license renewal. The Commission also ordered the school to cease and desist from advertising and enrolling new students.
On July 22, 2026, the Florida Board of Massage Therapy rescinded its approval of BEI dating back to September 19, 2016, citing violations of multiple provisions of the Florida Administrative Code.
The retroactive rescission raised questions about whether students who attended the school satisfied the educational requirements necessary to qualify for the MBLEx.
FSMTB Invalidates Passing MBLEx Examination Results
Under FSMTB policies, applicants must complete massage therapy education through a school or program approved or recognized by the appropriate regulatory authority. Following the Florida Board of Massage Therapy’s decision, FSMTB determined that education received at BEI did not satisfy its examination eligibility requirements.
On August 23, 2026, FSMTB reviewed the available information and determined that all passing MBLEx results for individuals who listed BEI on their examination applications would be invalidated.
This action is particularly significant because affected individuals may have already passed the examination and relied on those results when pursuing professional licensure. They may have been licensed and in practice for many years now.
The FSMTB notification does not establish that each affected graduate personally engaged in misconduct. Rather, the stated basis for the invalidation involves the school’s retroactive loss of approval and the resulting educational eligibility concerns going back to 2016.
Affected Massage Therapists Face a 12-Month Suspension
In addition to invalidating examination results, FSMTB suspended affected individuals’ access to the MBLEx and other FSMTB programs and services for 12 months, through August 23, 2027.
According to the notification, individuals seeking to regain examination eligibility after that date must satisfy several requirements. These include submitting a new MBLEx application and paying the required application fee, substantiating qualifying education at a new massage therapy program in which they enrolled after July 23, 2026, and paying an additional $500 administrative fee.
Applicants must comply with all FSMTB rules, policies, and procedures. FSMTB reserves the right to deny future examination access, even if all conditions are met.
What Should Affected Massage Therapists Do?
First, contact a board-certified health lawyer familiar with such matters.
Massage therapists who attended Bright Education Institute and received an FSMTB invalidation notice should carefully review the correspondence and preserve their educational records. Relevant documentation may include transcripts, enrollment agreements, attendance records, graduation certificates, examination applications, and communications with the school or licensing authorities.
Affected individuals should also determine whether their existing professional license or pending application may be impacted.
Because the FSMTB decision may affect examination eligibility and future licensing opportunities, consulting an experienced health law attorney may help individuals evaluate their circumstances and available legal options.

Protecting Your Massage Therapy License After an MBLEx Invalidation
The Bright Education Institute matter demonstrates how regulatory action against an educational institution can have significant consequences for its graduates. Massage therapists who completed their education, passed the MBLEx, and pursued professional licensure may now face uncertainty regarding their qualifications and professional futures.
Understanding the reasons for the examination invalidation and responding appropriately to regulatory inquiries are important steps in protecting professional licensing interests.
