Orlando health care attorney Michael L. Smith, an attorney with The Health Law Firm, spoke at the Seminole County Medical Society's Quarterly Meeting on May 18, 2010, at Heathrow Country Club in Lake Mary. Mr. Smith, who is Board Certified by The Florida Bar in the legal specialty of Health Law and who is also a respiratory therapist, spoke before an audience of approximately 120 physicians.
Mr. Smith talked about "Hot Issues in Health Law." He spoke about the new Health Reform Legislation, the increase in Medicare fraud detection and prevention initiatives, investigations on pain management physicians and clinics, and the newly created Zone Program Integrity Contractors (ZPICs), private contractors retained by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) being used to audit medical groups and facilities. Mr. Smith's comments were well received by the group and he received many questions on the topics.
Mr. Smith, and Orlando native, practices with The Health Law Firm in its Altamonte Springs office, heading up its business and transaction division. He is a member of the Orange County Bar Association, Seminole County Bar Association, American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA), The American Association of Nurse Attorneys (TAANA), the Health Law Section of The Florida Bar, and many other professional organizations. He worked as a respiratory therapist in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Florida Hospital prior to receiving his law degree from Stetson.
